The Burundi (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 incorporates EU sanctions into UK law wef: 31 Dec 2020. Travel ban and asset freezes apply. On the 17 Jan 2022 the UK adopted Burundi (Sanctions) Regulations 2021 S.I. 2021/1404 which revokes and replaces the Burundi (Sanctions) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019. The new framework removes the encouragement of the Government of Burundi to “participate in negotiations with its political opponents in good faith to bring about a peaceful solution to the political situation” as a purpose of the Burundi sanctions regime; as well as removing  “obstructing the search for a peaceful solution to the political situation in Burundi” from the criteria for including people/entities on the UK Burundi Sanction List. Apart from this, the Burundi (Sanctions) Regulations 2021 maintain the same effects as the 2019 regulations.
