IUA model clauses are published by the IUA Clauses Committee. The Committee is comprised of a range of wordings specialists from our member companies, together with broking and legal representatives.
Prior to publication, model clauses are subject to a formal review process, which can involve the testing of clauses against hypothetical scenarios, and accompanying guidance notes are also often issued. The IUA is open to receiving feedback on published clauses, which may result in updated versions being issued. We are heavily focussed on contract clarity and ensuring that model clauses are written in plain English. It is important to be mindful that clauses may be read by non-specialists and insurers are acutely aware of the obligation to treat customers fairly.
It is not compulsory for model clauses to be used as drafted, nor are they intended to replace the exercise of independent judgement. It is the responsibility of each individual company to judge their own circumstances when deciding whether or not to use a particular clause.
All IUA model clauses are freely accessible via the clauses section section found via the main menu bar of this website.

Policy Wordings Masterclasses

The IUA's Clauses Committee hosts workshops addressing fundamental questions relating to the drafting of insurance contracts. Member experts from the group explain how an effective insurance process is underpinned by clear and comprehensive policy wordings. Details of future events are posted in the Education section of this website. Recordings of past events can be viewed via a dedicated playlist on the IUA's YouTube channel.

Technical Roundtables

The IUA’s Clauses Committee hosts technical roundtable discussions exploring complex and emerging issues affecting insurance policy wordings and coverage. These sessions bring together member wordings experts with external legal, regulatory, and industry specialists to examine how new risks, legal developments, and market practices may impact existing and future policy language. Technical roundtables are designed to promote informed debate, practical insight, and shared understanding across the market. Summaries of key discussions are published by the IUA and can be accessed here, with details of forthcoming sessions circulated to members.
